I respectfully disagree. While I do agree that it's not the huge deal that some parts of the Internet may ultimately make it, I also don't think this attitude is an acceptable one for developers to have in general. Refunds alone do not make things right for at least a couple reasons. It effectively amounts to using backers as a source of commercial zero-interest loans. The money that they took 22 months ago is something backers could have invested or spent on something that they'd have gotten value from for the last few years.

That's part of why actual loans tend to require paying interest: opportunity cost is an actual thing. People put money down and accepted all the risk and opportunity cost involved for a specific vision laid out, and major deviations from that and yes, company-online-only is a major deviation should rightfully be questioned. There's a responsibility to really think things through before asking for money, and then to follow through.

Their stated justification is not some new issue, the tradeoff for online-only vs offline are extremely well known and explored at this point, and they could have pitched it as online-only from the start. For some people this will mean the game is now useless to them, and if they'd invested much emotional involvement never mind money then it'd be natural if the feeling of it being yanked away at the last moment will provoke some serious negative outbursts as well.

Finally, in this particular instance their excuses are a little frustrating, both technically and in how freaking patronizing they are. Yes, the offline experience might well be worse then online. But rather then making the choice for their customers about whether the tradeoffs are worth it or not they should have left it up to them. Assuming they're even being honest of course, rather then just making excuses for "this will make us more money".
